Flooding Los Angeles with fire from the Azusa Revival

Revival is easy because it’s God’s idea. All you have to do is say “yes” and he says, “I can work with that!”

If you were to come up to me a year ago and prophesy that I would be standing on a bench in the middle of a well-respected university in LA (UCLA), to preach the gospel to passers by who pretended they couldn’t see or hear me, I don’t know if I would have believed you. The very idea would have offended my insecurities and fear of rejection that I had worked so hard to hide and protect.

Colin — a story of hope

I met Colin a few years ago when I was working in the Sydney CBD. He was one of the local homeless guys that would set up at lunchtime in their favourite spot near work.

Every homeless person has a story to tell, and Colin was no different. Life had been going along fairly normally, when he injured his back and spent months in hospital with surgeries and recuperation. By the time he left hospital, his employer had fired him and withheld all his back pay and entitlements. This left Colin without job or money or the ability to pay rent, and the promise of a difficult legal battle to claim his wages. Without any significant people around him to help out, he ended up on the streets until he could find a way to get back to work.

This is stopping for the one

Last Friday I went and sat in the mall, aiming to draft my first post for this blog. I sat with pen and paper, and began a free-form stream of thoughts that will probably never end up seeing the light of day.

Concentrating on my thoughts and scribblings, I hadn’t noticed an acquaintance of mine until he walked up and warmly greeted me. James[ref]Not his real name.[/ref] is a member of my church, although we don’t cross paths nearly often enough.
