Something From Nothing — A Prayer

You created something out of nothing
Matter from a void
Earth from space
Land from water
Life from the soil
Humanity from the inanimate

You still create something from nothing
Hope in the void
Light in the darkness
Shelter in the storm
Life over death
Beauty from ashes

You recreate that which was destroyed
You heal that which was broken
You mend that which was torn
You lift up that which had fallen
You raise to life that which had died

You are so creative, God
You are so beautiful, God
You are so loving, God

Amen

In the beginning, You were singing
In the end You’ll still be, singing over me
In this moment, You’re right beside me
You’re everywhere, You’re in the air that I breathe

You are an endless ocean
A bottomless sea

The very idea would have offended my insecurities and fear of rejection that I had worked so hard to hide and protect.

Waiting on God

Waiting on God.

It’s a very Christian sounding expression. I wonder what it means? I’ve been in Christian leadership for thirty years, have studied theology, Christian history, ministry and Biblical languages. And yet, it’s perhaps the most fundamental aspects of the Christian life that remain shrouded in jargon and spiritual language. Like “waiting on God”.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

— Psalm 51:10-12

Stopping for the one?

Last year, our Senior Pastor had been to one of our sister churches and had heard one of their visiting speakers use the phrase “stopping for the one”. This was the first time I’d consciously heard that term, and it stood out to me. Sometimes a phrase just leaps out at you, and this one has definitely embedded itself in my mind.

For the last year I’ve been turning this over in my mind, examining it for the gold held within. I started noticing it come into use by a few speakers, but it stuck in the back of my mind and wouldn’t be silenced. I’ve been wrestling with the text — the Biblical meaning of meditation.
